Amazonian Elephant Ear

Also known as Alocacia x Amazonica or Kris plant or African mask plant, this one is quite likable as ornamental plant. The arrowhead leaves are strikingly glossy with dark green and creamy white ribs. When compared to other elephant ear leaves, this one has a pretty narrow leaves. It’s unique because of the wavy edges, which just adds the tropical vibe to it. The leaves can grow to 2 feet in length.

This is considered one of the most popular elephant ear plant types indoor that should be grown in indirect light or sun exposure. But if you want to grow it outdoor, feel free to do so as long as it’s 18 degrees Celsius (minimum) or around 65 degrees Fahrenheit outside. The soil should be moist without being too wet or soggy.

There is another alternative to the Amazonian type, which is the smaller Amazonia variant. Known as ‘Polly’ cultivar, it has less than 2 feet in height. Not only the leaves are smaller, but they have waxy appearance white white-ish veins. This compact plant needs enough moisture, humidity, and warmth. Just like its bigger Amazonian type, the Polly needs partial shade and indirect light.

Mammoth Elephant Ear

Known as Alocasia Macrorrhiza or the Upright Elephant Ear or the Giant Taro, the leaves are just like its name: gigantic. The leaves can grow up to 6 feet of length and 4 feet of width. The leaves are thick and somewhat ruffled, growing on the thick stalks coming out from the big bulb.

Just like other Alocasia, this one would point upward. This elephant ear plant types can grow in zones 9 up to 12. If you happen to live in colder areas or climates, make sure to winterize the bulbs (storing the bulb) from autumn to spring time.
